Steroids can increase the number of white blood cells in your blood. You might feel dizzy and you may feel as though the room is spinning. Let your doctor or nurse know if you have any problems with your eyes.

Topical steroids are also limited by their ability to penetrate the skin, and so they will only be effective for mild surface rashes. Some more severe rashes may require a range of treatments including oral steroids. However, given the number of patients who use topical corticosteroids, we understand reports of severe withdrawal reactions to be very infrequent.

They help to control many functions including the immune system, reducing inflammation and blood pressure. However, they can be extremely successful in helping to relieve symptoms like itching, irritation and skin flare-ups. For example, if you are suspected of having a food allergy, all suspect foods will be removed from your diet, and reintroduced one at a time to see if they cause a reaction. Therefore, only cases that have a clear timeline of worsening symptoms or increasing use of stronger steroids or multiple symptoms were included.

How can lichen planus be treated?

If there is little improvement in the rash, second line treatment with narrow band UVB therapy or acitretin (a tablet treatment) may be considered. If there is a poor response to second line treatment, third line tablet treatments including methotrexate, and hydroxychloroquine can be considered. These drugs were not developed to treat lichen planus (it is not in their product license), but there is some evidence that they may be helpful.

Treatment

The rash can heal to leave marks which are darker than the original skin colour. No, it is not hereditary; however, the tendency to get lichen planus can sometimes run in families especially twins. The MHRA will continue to monitor reports and provide further updates should they be required.
